The UK And Solar Panels
In the UK many view the idea of solar panels as a joke, with less than 12 hours of sunshine on average per year in some cities, solar power cannot possibly provide enough power for 80 million greedy microwave food eating drunks all year round. And here is where we identify the key problem, the UK ties it's low self-esteem to a lack of solar panels .
The sun generates billions of dollars worth of electricity every second, and yet the UK fails to capitalize on even a fraction of this wonder of nature due to chronic underinvestment in what is one of our few remaining resources. Incentives are increasingly being put in place to encourage people to switch to this form of energy, with the government very generously not charging a tax on usage of the sun within their territories.
The UK includes solar energy in it's feed-in tariff sources of renewable energy sources meaning that any energy fed back into the national grid will be bought unconditionally at a premium price, as well as various incentives to encourage investment. Incredibly, despite the admirable enthusiasm of the government, relying on the sun for their energy has not taken off with the UK people as well as had been hoped.
Although the efforts of their leaders were heroic, the people of the UK are not to be blamed either for the failure of this seemingly infinite energy source to prosper. The simple fact is that the cost of solar panels remains prohibitively high for most people, the equipment remains very expensive in relation to the amount of energy that it generates. Even though the government encourages you to do this, and then they give you money forever for owning them, it is still not worth the money.
Until we see a massive reduction in solar panels cost, quite simply we will not see solar energy as anything more than a novelty.
